Last week, our friends at Manhattan User’s Guide—whose daily emails you won’t regret signing up for—mentioned the Illuminating Engineering Society‘s free “Nightseeing Map.” As usual, MUG was right to get excited about it: The map is a handy reminder of how wonderful the lighting is in New York, and how much of the city’s glamour comes from its lighting. The map’s downtown section, devoted to the area from Duane Street to Battery Park, spotlights—sorry, couldn’t help it—30 locations, including 7 World Trade, the Irish Hunger Memorial (above), and the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Given all that, we’re remaining hopeful that the city will do more to light some of the big, gorgeous buildings in the civic center area, which seem to be going dark as the years pass.
