Brick Behaving Badly?

brick-poster-by-tribeca-citizenThese posters around southern Tribeca rang an alarm with me, because I’ve sat through enough CB1 Tribeca committee meetings to pretty much know that Brick, the restaurant at 22 Warren, is heading for trouble. Four DJs? (Or maybe only three, really, if “DJ Silent” is true to his name….) Reduced admission before midnight (meaning the party must go on for a while)? On a Thursday? On a residential street? I found it hard to believe that Brick’s liquor license would allow for such a party.

I called Brick to ask about the event, and the man who answered said, “I don’t know anything about that. You’d have to talk to one of the promoters.” I was asking how to get hold of them when he hung up.

Sure enough, the State Liquor Authority confirmed that Brick’s liquor license allows only for background music (in other words, no DJs) and does not permit dancing, and Brick may serve alcohol until 1 a.m. on Thursdays. When I asked whether having a party in a private event space changed matters, I was told that the entire establishment must conform to the license.

Considering that Brick’s license will be up for renewal soon—it expires July 31—and given the slaps that bars on nearby Murray and Reade Streets have gotten lately, the owner(s) might want to be a little more careful.

We were told it was something much different and when we saw the flier we canceled immediately, even before anyone complained we canceled the party and were closed at 10:00.
