In the News: W Downtown Giveaway

••• As I believe I may have suggested, the W New York Downtown hotel is indeed discounting rooms around its mid-August opening. Only a fool would pay full price to stay in a new hotel, because things will go wrong. (HotelChatter)

••• Related: “HGTV will be handing over the keys to a 900-square-foot apartment in the Financial District’s brand new and highly delayed W New York Downtown condo/hotel to a contest winner. Like, to keep. Forever.” (Curbed) I walked by the building the other day, and there’s a big-in-a-cheesy-way neon sign for the BLT Bar & Grill in the hotel. How long till the BLT brand gets licensed out to airports? One year?

••• “A 27-year-resident of Battery Park City, Martha Gallo, has been nominated by Gov. David Paterson to serve on the board of the Battery Park City Authority.” (Broadsheet Daily)

••• “A group of film students were taken to the hospital Friday after drinking from a Downtown school’s water fountain that they claimed was spewing out unusually colored ‘blue’ water. Five students got sick after they drank from the fountain during a dance class at the New York Film Academy, inside Millennium High School at 75 Broad Street.” (DNAinfo)

••• A review of Perfume Genius’s recent show at 92YTribeca. (New York Times)

••• “Jonathan Schrag and Kirstin H. Schrag bought a condo at 139 Chambers St. in Tribeca from Thomas Merrill and Mary B. Forshaw for $2.2 million on June 11. Unit #4 is in a cooperative apartment building with 10 units on 10 floors. Mr. Schrag is executive director of Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative Inc., which he joined in 2008.” (Blockshopper)

  1. Re: BLT Bar & Grill in airports, I think it may have already happened, though I don’t have time to look it up right now. Also, Laurent Tourondel no longer has anything to do with BLT Restaurant Group:

  2. BLT Bar & Grill to open on Tuesday July 27th.
