In the News: Pier A Proposal

••• One of the four Pier A proposals under consideration by the Battery Park City Authority is for a pavilion celebrating Italy: It “is a celebration, not just of Italian ingenuity and flair, but also of all elements of la dolce vita. For starters, [Joseph J. Grano] envisions an entrance flanked by a Roman chariot and a Ferrari—’to show the progress,’ he said.” (New York Times) By the way, last winter I was invited to take a look at the under-renovation pier. The photos—including the one at right—are worth checking out.

••• Toloache Taqueria opens Thursday at 83 Maiden Lane (at Gold), serving “soups, salads, sandwiches, and tacos,” says the New York Times.

••• “The popular downtown restaurant SouthWest NY isn’t just a hangout for local residents and workers—it’s also home to mice, roaches and flies, according to a recent Health Department inspection. City inspectors slammed SouthWest NY with 70 violation points after an inspection last month, more than any other restaurant in Battery Park City.” (DNAinfo)

••• Ashley Olsen was seen checking out 28 Laight. (New York Post, via Curbed) The nearest Starbucks is, what, at Spring and Varick? That’s around the tunnel or over the bridge. I don’t see it happening.
