Seen & Heard: Asphalt Green Battery Park City

••• There will be a rally to protest firehouse closures this Friday at noon at City Hall Park.

••• A reader wrote in suggesting I cover Mike & Son, the barber shop on Church near Murray, which just opened up another location on Chambers: “They’re owned by the super-kind father/son combo of Dr. Mike, and his son, Albert, who could be the nicest guy in the ‘hood. The new locale is more of a ‘beauty parlor’ rather than the traditional barber found at their Church Street location. The Church location is consistently packed with men and kids from the neighborhood. These hard-working guys could use some noteworthy, positive press.” As I told the reader, I have no good excuse for not covering it other than (a) certain types of shops are really hard to write much about, and (b) I forgot.

••• Asphalt Green Battery Park City‘s membership office will open July 5 at the Verdesian (211 North End); the facility proper will be done by late 2011, according to the website. (As you can see from the photo, I always peek through the window when I walk by: It’s a huge space.) The website also says that in the meantime AGBPC will offer two summer outdoor programs starting in mid-June: One is for runners ($49 for eight sessions on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons; starts June 14), the other is a boot camp ($175 for seven sessions Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:15 a.m.). Sign up on the website.
