Another Design Store Is Heading North

“We plan on being in Tribeca for a long time,” said Susan Keeney of Lucca Antiques when it opened on Duane Street in March of 2010. “We’re putting roots down.” Alas, the traffic just didn’t come, and now Lucca is heading to the Interior Design Building on the Upper East Side, following in the footsteps of Duane, Intérieurs, and probably others I can’t think of. “Designers don’t want to come down here just to visit one store,” said the gentleman packing up at Lucca today. The sign in the window says they’re moving July 1, but they’re pretty much gone—he closed the door when I left—and could open in the new location as soon as tomorrow.

  1. <1% of the population selling high-priced goods to itself is a business model that can only be sustained for so long. There are broader-based lessons in this, of course, esp. in the area of rent/property values, but denial seems to be the ready response.
