In the News: Sandy Downturn?

••• The New York Times on a possible impact of Sandy on downtown real estate: “The question now facing downtown New York is whether the hurricane stigma is just a short-term phenomenon, or will persist into the long term as well. Insurance costs are sure to rise, and lenders could become tougher on the area, mortgage brokers say, putting a damper on one of the great real estate stories in the country over the past decade.”

••• “Over a month after the storm surge from Hurricane Sandy swamped the BMT’s Whitehall St. station, R train service to Lower Manhattan will return at 6 a.m. on Monday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Sunday night. There is, however, a key twist though as Whitehall will be serviced by trains that run only between Queens and Manhattan. ••• AM New York asked Ed “Burnsie” Burns what he would most like to see changed or accomplished in NYC? “I would love to see a foot bridge over the West Side Highway in Tribeca, somewhere between Canal and Chambers Street. There is a constant flow of toddlers and teenagers trying to get across that highway to the now beautiful Hudson River Park and it can be dangerous. A foot bridge would be really useful.”

  1. Sweet buttermilk pancakes, a foot bridge?!! That’s what “Burnsie” wants MOST for NYC this Christmas? That really burns me up. I wish Santa would bring every parent (this especially includes all Dads that wear black North Face-ish puffy down vests) in Tribeca (the area <= Canal/West/Vesey/Broadway, no other boundaries will be accepted at this time) some basic street-crossing & children-controlling/leashing/hand-holding skills, so that they will know how to best navigate West and/or Canal Street without being assaulted by the front bumper of a Range Rover Sport or Mini Cooper S. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until the Hudson River Park Improvement District (a.k.a. Flood Zone A) has been unanimously approved, when there will be plenty of tax money wasted/invested on foot bridges, crossing guards, and chestnuts roasting by open fires. Oh turkey meatballs, how are we going to pay for the flood barriers underneath the Verrazano Bridge once we spend all of that cash building "Burnsie's" foot bridge?!! Better also ask Santa for swimming lessons, just to be safe.
