Where Tribeca Chefs Eat When They’re Not in Tribeca

FED screengrabWhen the folks at Find. Eat. Drink.—a website with recommendations from food-industry pros—emailed to say they have a new iPhone app (download here), I said I’d love to run a post of some of the local experts’ non-Tribeca recommendations. First, a description of the app: “The F.E.D. app is the world’s first travel guide curated by top tier chefs, sommeliers, bartenders, baristas, pitmasters, and food artisans. […] You can search close to home or when you are abroad, exploring by city or pro. The Near Me geo-location feature is perfect for when you are already ‘out and about’ without a reservation.”

MARC FORGIONE
Recommendation: Peasant in Soho
“I love going to Peasant as much as possible. It’s smoky and soulful. You order sardines out of that oven and you know it’s going to be delicious The Polpi in Purgatorio (baby octopus with chile peppers)—I just love it!”

Recommendation: Dim Sum Go Go in Chinatown [right]
“I’m a man of the classics and I like their har gau (shrimp dumplings). I think that’s a good standard. If you can do a really good har gau, then that says a lot for your technique as a chef and for the rest of the dim sum.”

FLOYD CARDOZ, NORTH END GRILL
Recommendation: Saravanaas in Kips Bay
“They have a Thali that is just great, it’s like four or five vegetables and it’s only available at lunch and dinner. The other thing I like about Saravanaas is that they give you these extra chutneys with your dosa.”

JIMMY BRADLEY, THE HARRISON
Recommendation: Il Buco Alimentari e Vineria in Noho
“Chef Justin Smillie is doing great food here. It’s a cafe, a restaurant, a private space and a market space all in one, very diverse, but simply prepared foods and a very unique wine program.”

MARC MURPHY, LANDMARC
Recommendation: Big Wong King in Chinatown
“They have the best dried scallop congee and they have this great smoked tripe. They do a poached chicken breast with peanut oil, scallions and ginger. It’s like a factory with people going in and out and the service is like they throw it at you. But, it’s f-ing amazing!”

JEHANGIR MEHTA, MEHTAPHOR
Recommendation: Haandi and Tiffin Wallah in Kips Bay
“Haandi makes a great Biryani and I recommend you pack some up and eat at home. And for a quick meal, I like South Indian food and a rava dosa at Tiffin off Lexington Avenue is delicious.”

FRANÇOIS PAYARD, FRANÇOIS PAYARD BAKERY
Recommendation: Motorino in the East Village
“My favorite pizza is Motorino. I really like the crust. It’s a crunchy Neapolitan-style crust. I like that they have different toppings, and really like the one with Brussels sprouts, garlic, pecorino, and smoked pancetta.”

JAKE DICKSON, DICKSON’S FARMSTAND MEATS
Recommendation: Keens Steak House in Midtown
“For their steak, the atmosphere, and the history.”
