CB1 Tribeca Committee: The Unofficial Minutes (April)

HUDSON RIVER PARK ACT AMENDMENT
The committee was asked to vote on a resolution that stated that it has a “strong vested interest in the park,” and that the board would like to see an expansion of sports opportunities in the neighborhood (which Pier 40). It said nothing about revenue, either through development or the Neighborhood Improvement District. Vote: 9-0.

SIDEWALK CAFÉ LICENSE RENEWAL FOR PETRARCA (34 WHITE)
Passed 9-0 even though no one from Petrarca showed up.

STREET WALL VARIANCE FOR 361 BROADWAY
This was a bureaucratic issue: CB1 and the Landmarks Preservation Commssion had already approved Shigeru Ban’s two-story rooftop addition, part of a condo conversion happening at the building on the southwest corner of Broadway and Franklin, but it turned out that zoning required the new penthouse not be set back. So, a variance. Vote: 9-0.

PUBLIC ART FOR TRIBECA PARK
The public art coordinator for the Parks Department was on hand to let teh neighborhood know that an aluminum sculpture by Cheryl Farber Smith will be in Tribeca Park (at Beach and W. Broadway) from May through October. It’s bright yellow, nine feet tall, and the base is five feet by eight feet. “It’s about balance, fun, mystery,” said the artist. Pictured: A similar sculpture that was on view in Brooklyn’s Columbus Park.

LIQUOR LICENSE APPLICATION: SPRING STUDIOS AT 50 VARICK
I had to leave as Spring was re-making its case for a liquor license, including presentations by traffic and sound experts and a sheaf of letters of support from Tribeca Cinemas, local residents, and people/companies such as Alexander Wang, Barneys New York, Donatella Versace, Diane von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, and more. So, were you there? What happened? (Comment or email tribecacitizen@gmail.com) That goes for any/all of the below, too. UPDATE: Spring Studios got the OK, per DNAinfo’s report.

LIQUOR LICENSE APPLICATION: SIRING ASIAN GRILL AT 325 BROADWAY)

LIQUOR LICENSE APPLICATION: ECCO AT 124 CHAMBERS

LIQUOR LICENSE APPLICATION: CAFETERIA AT 113 READE
UPDATE:
According to DNAinfo, the Cosmopolitan Hotel has decided not to tear down the old MaryAnn’s building, and instead renovate it into a home for the second Cafeteria restaurant. The restaurant won 2 a.m. nightly approval, as long as the W. Broadway entrance is closed at 11 p.m., forcing patrons to exit via “an entrance between the hotel and the restaurant.” Also: The restaurant said it “would pay to outfit any bedroom windows on the block with CitiQuiet windows—a double paned window that [restaurateur Mark] Amadie says blocks out 90 percent of the street noise.”

LIQUOR LICENSE AMENDMENT: CRICKETERS ARMS AT 57 MURRAY

LIQUOR LICENSE AMENDMENT: ZUTTO
The closing hours had been 11 p.m., so the restaurant wanted later, asking for 2 a.m. nightly and getting 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 1 a.m. on the rest. Vote: 9-0.

NEWSSTAND APPLICATION: SOUTHWEST CORNER OF W. BROADWAY AND LEONARD

NEWSSTAND APPLICATION: SOUTH SIDE OF CHAMBERS BETWEEN GREENWICH AND WEST

  1. Manhattan and Brooklyn are the two most expensive places to live in the U.S.: report. Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/manhattan-brooklyn-expensive-article-1.1313956#ixzz2QD3tvQ9X

Of course we can add a “it’s only a dinner out – NID” tax. What’s a couple of more missed dinners/dollars? I resolve that CB1 has a strong vested interest in being a bunch of idiots. Second?

  2. Instead of Smithers calling those with whom he might disagree idiots, why doesn’t he apply to be a Community Board member wherever he lives? Anyway, I’m sure he does a lot of public service so he feels comfortable slinging mud at others who also do public service, right?

  3. My deepest apologies, Ehrmann. CB1’s accomplishments and resolutions are unparalleled in the history of public service. I resolve that I am the idiot.

  4. Dear Mr. Ehrmann – What is CB1 doing on behalf of the community to stop loud construction on Saturdays in Tribeca? All week long we have to put up with the noise and then we have to listen to it on our weekends? Presently, a loud garbage truck sits on Staple Street running its engine while dumping metal container after metal container, amongst the other loud noise inside and out of the building on Harrison. It’s almost a daily occurrence during the week. Should I call 311 or DoB or some other government agency that will do nothing?

  5. Beep, Beep, Beep….oh look, the rubbish truck is back for another round of Saturday afternoon disturbance. Ahhhh, weekends. Thank you CB1 for your proactive guardianship of our community’s quality of life.
