SOHO REP UPDATE
The Soho Rep theater group just wanted to make sure folks around here know that it exists and that it’s open to partnerships with local businesses. One committee member wondered whether the theater company (which was located in Soho when it was founded in 1975, moving to Walker in 1991) has ever considered changing its name, and when they jokingly responded that that had thought about becoming “Soho Rep in Tribeca,” he pushed harder: “What’s the state of that?” Maybe we need a subcommittee to deal with Soho Rep, Soho Photo, Soho Pharmacy…. And the Tribeca Taco Truck that’s always above Canal!
SPRING STUDIOS WAIVER
The Spring Studios complex needed a waiver for the State Liquor Authority reiterating everything CB1 had agreed to, including all the stipulations. Vote: 7-0-1 (one member was too new to vote on the matter).
HERITAGE OF PRIDE EVENTS ON PIER 26
Last year’s gay pride dances on Pier 26 were too loud for everyone in the area, so the organization was back in front of CB1 to explain how it would make things better this summer. The two dances will each be an hour shorter, running from 4 p.m. (instead of 3 p.m.) to 10 p.m., on Saturday, June 28, and Sunday, June 29. (There’s also a rally with live music and speeches from 6 p.m. to 9: 30 p.m. on Friday, June 27. And there will be fireworks at the end of Sunday evening’s dance. Working with the Hudson River Park Trust, Heritage of Pride has enlisted an acoustic engineer to reconfigure the layout (so the stage and speakers will point north rather than west or south), and the engineer will show up to next month’s meeting of the CB1 Quality of Life Committee to explain it all in detail. Also, the performers will abide by the city’s strict soundcheck requirements.
SIDEWALK CAFÉ PERMIT: THE ODEON
No change from the existing café. Vote: 9-0.
LIQUOR LICENSE TRANSFER: BRICK (22 WARREN)
Brick‘s current owner is handing over the business to the general manager, who said there would be no change in operation, menu, or hours—but he did say he’d be making the space “nicer.” Vote: 8-0? 9-0? It was hard to tell because committee members were standing up and talking amongst themselves.
SIDEWALK CAFÉ PERMIT: ZUTTO
No change from Zutto‘s existing café. Vote: 7-0? 8-0? Does it matter?
STREET-ACTIVITY PERMIT: FRIENDS OF DUANE PARK
Duane Park’s very cute swing dance event will happen again this summer, courtesy of the Friends of. (Even if you don’t dance, it’s fun to hang out and watch; I do hope they’ll have a food truck or two again.) It’s Wednesday, June 18, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and it’s free (including instruction from a swing dance teacher). Vote: 9-0.
PHYSICAL CULTURE PERMIT: THE LIVE WELL COMPANY (92 LAIGHT)
The Live Well Company, the private gym and training studio that recently moved into the River Lofts, needed the city permit that any business with a shower needs. Vote: 9-0.
PHYSICAL CULTURE PERMIT: EXCEED PHYSICAL CULTURE (97 READE)
Exceed Physical Culture also needs the permit for its new studio opening in half of the old Bell Bates store. (The other half will be Gotham Bikes, which is moving from W. Broadway.) Exceed’s space will be 6,000 square feet, spread over three floors. To be proactive about sound mitigation, the ground-floor space is being constructed as a box within a box. Vote: 9-0.
LIQUOR-LICENSE APPLICATION: GRAND BANKS (PIER 25)
The wooden boat with a raw bar on the deck is discussed here.
SIDEWALK CAFÉ PERMIT: AMERICAN FLATBREAD TRIBECA HEARTH (205 HUDSON)
The tables will be on Hudson, near Canal. Vote: 6-0? 7-0?

Any chance that the concert series will come back if they fix the noise problem?
Funny you should ask that. At last night’s meeting, someone on the committee pointed out that the gay pride events, while noisy, were not helped by coming amid the Pier 26 concert season. And the Hudson River Park rep confirmed that there was no concert series—and I”m pretty sure she said “this summer” (which made me wonder if the HRPT isn’t working on a plan for 2015).
