Seen & Heard: Strobing Light Atop 1 World Trade Center

••• Café Noir put up signage for its new location at 35 Lispenard.

••• Sweetgreen is opening at 100 Kenmare (between Cleveland Place and Mulberry) “at the end of the year.”

••• From Community Board 1: “Howard Hughes Corporation has requested a postponement of the Landmarks Committee meeting scheduled for June 16, 2014 to a date in July so that they can further develop their proposal in response to the guiding principles developed by the Seaport Working Group.”

••• From J.: “A few weeks ago I noticed that the strobe light at the top of the Freedom Tower is quite bright at night.  I have south facing windows, and at night my room that faces south pulses with with the strobe from the Freedom Tower. I wanted to write in and ask if any of your other readers had commented on it.” Either say so in the comments or feel free to email me at tribecacitizen@gmail.com. UPDATE: “I have noticed that the strobe seems to be distractingly bright,” emailed Kevin. “If there is something we can do, I’d be interested to learn more. Also, see Sara’s comment below.

••• This Saturday, Tribeca Trust is creating a pop-up plaza at Finn Square—the adjacent block of Varick (in front of the Starbucks and Drybar Square Diner) will be closed to cars from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect “activities, music & dance performances, bike workshops and educational seminars on open space and transportation alternatives.” Also, Tribeca Trust will be gathering public opinion on the idea of it being permanent.

Quiznos sign••• When the Quiznos on Chambers closed “due to construction,” one could only assume it wasn’t reopening. Lo and behold, a sign in the window today says it reopened today (although it didn’t appear that way). Kind of disappointed everyone is welcome—I’d love to see a velvet rope outside….

••• Crunch posted a help-wanted ad on Craigslist looking for trainers for a gym in Tribeca. I wondered whether the company had found another location—its plans for 140 Franklin were nixed by the building—but when I called another gym the guy said he thought that was for the gym, at Bowery and E. 4th St….

  1. I have had the same experience with the Freedom Tower, I saw the strobe light in my bedroom, I was wondering why that would be the case, it is quite bright and I guess I will be getting black out shades…

  2. The strobe also bounces off the west facing side of the Gehry tower – the skin and design of the 8 Spruce Street building totally enhance it.

  3. They’ve gone from a blinking red light to an incredibly bright white strobe. Why? Is it necessary? It’s very unpleasant to say the least.

  4. I’ve noticed the strobe too and find it VERY annoying.

  5. These are aviation anti-collision
    lights, and by regulation, high
    intensity flashing white strobes
are required on all Structures greater
    than 500 ft tall.

Older buildings like the Empire State are
    probably grandfathered to use medium
    intensity red flashing lights.

  6. I’ve read some press thing from them bragging about the fact that the light can be seen all the way in Connecticut, so they know exactly how crazy bright it is. Not sure why they think that it’s needed, but this is their intention.

  7. hmmmm…i live 2 blks away and saw that they have had it off for the last week or so………..

  8. It’s not a regular strobe, is it? At first, I thought it was lightning. I’m two, three blocks away. Maybe I rarely notice it because the whole neighborhood around wtc is so crazy bright anyway, what with the idiot commercial buildings that leave their lights on all night.

  9. looking up at the WTC late last night, i noticed only a normal
    red anti-collision light.
