Seen & Heard: Macaron Café Opens Saturday

••• Racines NY got some real signage, so now all you northwest Tribecans braving the southeast can actually find it.

••• Macaron Café opens this Saturday (on Greenwich between Reade and Chambers).

••• “Gotham,” the Batman-ish TV show, is shooting in northeast Tribeca on Friday. And “Boardwalk Empire” is shooting Monday around Church and Reade. In the past, when the shoot is outside, it means we get fun period sets (or these), so keep your eyes open.

andys deli••• Andy’s Deli on Broadway (just north of Reade) was closed by the Health Department.

••• I was watching the strobe light atop 1 World Trade Center last night, when it suddenly stopped (this was around 8:50 p.m.). If it’s an FAA requirement, why would it stop? Also, the non-strobe light up near the tippy-top appears to rotate, because it subtly changes, and I think that’s because the light gets blocked by the frame. But I’m too far to tell, even with binoculars. Can anyone closer to it tell what’s going on? UPDATE: See the two comments below.

••• “Back to the development site bordered by West, Vestry, Washington and Desbrosses,” emailed a reader. “I noticed that all the poles and green wooden fencing formerly erected on the corner of Vestry and Washington was suddenly taken down, the metal poles removed and the holes in the sidewalk filled in. Any idea why the change of heart?” Nope. Anyone know anything?

••• A sidewalk shed has gone up along 101 Murray, so demolition must be starting soon.

  1. Except for the brief period when the strobe was left on at night, back when we all noticed it, the strobe has only ever operated during daylight hours. After dark. It’s always been a softer light, or a red light, located and beaming from the top, as opposed to the side emitting strobe. Just a guess, but I’ll bet the FAA requires that very strong vertical strobe during daylight hours. After the very brief few days when we all noticed it bouncing off our buildings at night, it was corrected – about 10 days ago. Guessing that the timer just failed!

  2. I undestrand that the Non-Strobe light at the top of the WTC spire is actually a beacon, meant to be seen at 30 miles of distance. And it rotates! It is a symbolic beacon of freedom and the american dream, etc…

  3. Sure hope Racines didn’t lose the Sunny One sign, I loved that.

  4. I was in Racines NY on Wednesday and the NYTimes photographer was there — review to follow.
