Seen & Heard: Big Eric Garner Protest Today

••• There’s clearly going to be a big Eric Garner–related protest near City Hall today, judging from the barriers already going up on Broadway. Someone on Twitter said it’s at 5:30 p.m.—in case you want to join or want to get away (if the latter, take your ID; my guess is that the area will go into lockdown mode). Wait, someone else on Twitter said it’s at Foley Square. I guess we’ll see. (UPDATE: It’s possible the barriers on Broadway are for this morning’s protest at the McDonald’s about the minimum wage.)

••• It’s too soon to call 460 Washington a winner, but all things considered, it’s looking pretty good. Click it to see it better.

460 Washington••• “Say goodbye to another institution,” tweeted Pen Parentis‘s M.M. De Voe about the Weinstein & Holtzman hardware store on Park Row. “They aren’t actually moving. They’re going construction-only.” I wasn’t sure what that meant, so I called. The office is moving to 44 Wall and shipping/receiving is moving to the Bronx (but there will no longer be a store). I’ll miss that sign. UPDATE: Do read Luis’s comment about why this likely means big plans for that corner.

••• She also tweets that “the new Aloft hotel opening on Ann street is going to have a curated local artist art gallery.” And there will be weekly concerts for the neighborhood.

••• The Greek is planning a brunch party this Sunday: “We will be presenting drink specials by Mastiqua and Blink and we will be offering complimentary mezes at the bar. On decks will be DJ Tom Galis.” The question is, are kids welcome?

••• Special Community Board 1 Landmarks Committee meeting next week.

CB1 Landmarks Seaport••• Next Wednesday (Dec. 10) at 4 p.m. is the “Holiday Sing” at Bogardus Plaza: “Get into the holiday spirit with a performance by local favorites the Church Street School Choristers and the Battery Park City Adult Chorus. We’ll also be collecting new, unwrapped toys for kids aged 1-4 years for local children’s organization, The Door. And new this year…. Come help us decorate the garden with over 600 sparkly snowflake ornaments! We’ll have lots of hot chocolate and some treats, too!”

••• Well, tickle me pink: Look whose photos made it onto the Friends of Washington Market Park holiday card! (They’re from this photo essay.)

WMP Happy Holidays 2014

  1. Yep–based on Twitter the Garner protest is tonight at 5:30 starting at Foley Square. I don’t know what direction they’re going. The minimum wage protest started at McDonald’s on Chambers already, going towards City Hall.

  2. The Hardware store closing is fascinating. Previously the owner had been adamant that he would not sell as he did great business here. However, his building (which they own) sits smack in the middle of the other parcels that are owned by the J&R people. I think this means that they have agreed to sell ; making all the parcels north of the landmark 15 Park Row one continguous potential building site. Not sure how high they could go as they could potentially block views from 113 Nassau (rental) and the under construction (115 Nassau) aka 5 Beekman Condos. Maybe all of the air rights could be concentrated on the corner of Beekman and Park Row? Very intereseting indeed.

  3. That would make sense! :-)

  4. 460 took away our water view but certainly agree that is a pretty good looking addition to the block. They have gone the extra mile to ensure it does blend well into the neighborhood.
Maybe they can redo Truffles next? ;)
