Seen & Heard: Renderings vs. Reality

••• Congratulations to Ellen Goosenberg Kent, who won an Academy Award last night (and who lives in Tribeca, says Estancia 460) for directing the documentary Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1.

Estancia tweet••• A pipe burst in 168 Duane, and the basement was affected, so the Armoury men’s store is closed for a few days. It should be open by Friday at the latest (and the online shop is still open).

The Armoury••• This month’s 1st Precinct Community Council meeting is Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at  the 1st Precinct (Varick and Ericsson).

••• The small building on Desbrosses, next to where Ponte’s restaurant was, is gone.

Desbrosses demo••• The “for lease” signs are down at 52 Laight. Could something be moving in?

52 Laight••• Check out the rendering of 115 Nassau, a.k.a. the Beekman hotel’s sister condo tower, and a pic of it under construction. I’m not sure I like the white in the rendering, but do you think they’re going to do something to lighten the concrete? Or are we going to end with another 56 Leonard—where the renderings promised something different than what we’re going to get?

  1. 56 Leonard is such a letdown.

    • I’m not quite ready to write off 56 Leonard as a failure. It’s still missing at least 100 feet off the top, as far as I recall, and that’s where a lot of the fun stuff is designated to happen.

  2. my studio overlooks the 56 leonard construction. as bad as it looks now, it will get worse with time. the terraces are not integral to the superstructure and the glass looks thin and cheap. it’s bound to have problems with wind and storm damage over time.

  3. 56 Leonard is such an achievement

  4. I’m also waiting for it to look ‘cool’. Right now its a glass box with a bunch of balconies the noone will sit on anyway because it will be too windy or hot…..

  5. When’s the Kapoor bean arriving?
