In the News: Small Supermarket Opening at the World Trade Center

Westfield1••• “An executive for Westfield Properties, the company that is leasing out the retail space at the World Trade Center and the Fulton Transit Center, said the grocer would occupy 25,000 square feet below 4 World Trade Center at Church and Liberty Streets.” No word on which one, but that size is in line with what Fairway wants to do now, if the company can get its ship righted. (For comparison’s sake, the Whole Foods in Tribeca is 69,000 square feet.) —Tribeca Trib UPDATE: See Luis’s comment; he says this could very well be Market Lane (f.k.a. Jones the Grocer), although calling that a supermarket seems a stretch and a half.

••• “Five elected officials representing Lower Manhattan have cosigned a letter to Battery Park City Authority chair Dennis Mehiel calling for a re-evaluation of that agency’s controversial decision to hire private security guards in place of the uniformed law enforcement personnel who have patrolled the community for 23 years.” —Broadsheet

••• DNAinfo has the inevitable story about how some downtown residents are mourning the loss of Sheldon Silver and the power he wielded. So we don’t care how corrupt he was because it benefited us? Yikes.

••• The Four Seasons restaurant is now saying that it’s relocating near its current Midtown location (and not 28 Liberty or FiDi in general). —New York Post

••• “At the center of the bribery scheme was John Cassisi, an electrician and former child actor who in early 2012 had risen to become the director of global construction for Citi Realty Services, the Citigroup unit that manages its offices and branches. The companies paid Mr. Cassisi more than $500,000 in bribes over three years in an effort to win contracts on a $1.6 billion project to renovate the corporation’s future headquarters at 388 Greenwich Street in TriBeCa, the Manhattan district attorney’s office said.” —New York Times

  1. I don’t think the news of a supermarket at the WTC is new news at all. It had been previously announced that Jones the Grocer was opening. Then it was announced that Jones the Grocer had changed its name to Market Lane. That name was one of the vendors listed in the presentation at CB1 last night. I think Market Lane is the supermarket in question. The great thing is that it will be located at 4 WTC which will be great for FiDi residents in Greenwich South in particular.

  2. Agree with your comment about the pathetic tributes to Sheldon Silver in The Broadsheet from various community “leaders.” Was no one embarrassed by Silver using his office for personal enrichment? The ends apparently justified the thoroughly corrupt means.

  3. Of course corruption must be acknowledged and confronted. But I believe that many of us, who lived here on 9/11 and who stayed here in incredibly difficult conditions, remember Mr. Silver with gratitude as one of the few people in power who really understood our problems and needs. It is never easy — and shouldn’t be easy — to forget a helping hand. Mr. Silver is being punished for any misdeeds; but many of us will always remember how much he helped us to recover.

We tend to forget yesterday too quickly. It breaks my heart to see our brave first responders having to fight for assistance in Washington right now. Let’s be aware of our own history in every instance. We are not always in the right but, sometimes, right and wrong is complicated. Acknowledgment of wrong doing is essential, but so is understanding.
