Crystal Torres knows the area: She lives in Battery Park City, and she worked for seven years total as a hairstylist at two Tribeca salons, Younghee and Lotus, both on N. Moore. So when she was ready to open her own place, she set out looking for a space around here. And she was thrilled to discover that the cute southeast corner of Harrison and Staple, formerly the Kanlo tea shop, was available.
Named after her two kids, Ethan Rose Salon has seven chairs, and it welcomes women and men. While the outside looks nice and proper with its pretty planters, Torres brought some New York City energy inside with white graffiti-inspired lettering on the walls. The letters are the ones in “Ethan Rose,” but intertwined and mixed up.
“As a stylist, I always wanted to control the client’s entire experience, and to exceed their expectations—and now I can do that,” she says. To wit, Ethan Rose’s tagline is “3 in 1 Salon,” because you can have a manicure and pedicure while you’re getting your hair done. “Too often, clients would have to choose one or the other, because they didn’t have time for both,” says Torres. “And we’ve executed it so that you’re always comfortable.” (Nail service is only available to those getting a hair treatment.)
Currently, the salon is using Kérastase products, but Torres is developing her own line, which she plans to have ready by the end of next year. And her plans don’t stop there: “I’d like to expand to FiDi, Midtown, L.A., Chicago… Places where people are in a hurry.” She’s not going to forsake us, though: Tribeca residents get 10% off, now and forever.
Ethan Rose Salon is at 5 Harrison (at Staple), 212-233-1379; ethanrosesalon.com.
