In the News: Violent High School Students

••• “The principal at a lower Manhattan high school was beaten to a pulp by a student on Monday when he told the teen to remove his headphones, sources said.” It was Manhattan Early College School for Advertising, which is in inside Murry Bergtraum High School, by the Brooklyn Bridge. The other day, I received an email from a reader who lives nearby; locals are starting to get concerned about students hanging around and fighting on Fulton (where school security won’t intervene)—and this is unlikely to help. —New York Post

••• The September issue of Interior Design featured a 6,400-square-foot triplex created by Nancy Nienberg of Wunderground Architecture + Design and Tribeca’s own Damon Liss Design. Some years ago, the owners combined two three-bedrooms in a new conversion. More recently, they bought “the apartment above to convert into the [three] children’s private realm.”

••• T Magazine profiles Kris Kim, owner of the La Garçonne boutique. The slideshow includes a few photos of her apartment, which also has a minimalist aesthetic; the text says that the shop is in a former bakery, which must have been before it was the offices of Trisha Brown Dance Company.

••• “At its full monthly meeting this evening, Community Board 1 will weigh a resolution, ratified by the panel’s Battery Park City Committee earlier in October, calling for a halt to a recent project by the Battery Park City Authority to study scenarios under which South End Avenue could be redesigned.” The best part of the Broadsheet‘s article is this quote from Jeff Mihok, co-chair of CB1’s Battery Park City Committee, from an earlier meeting: “The Authority spent $272,000 to get 540 survey responses. That’s about $500 per response, which is absurd.”

••• “The MTA plans to extend the M1 bus route to Worth Street by next spring. Instead of turning back uptown on Lafayette St. from E. 8th St., the M1 will continue down E. 8th St. and turn downtown on Third Ave., onto Bowery, turn west onto Worth St. and the head uptown on Centre St. to continue onto Lafayette St. and get back to the existing route.” —Downtown Express

  1. The article about La Garconne is correct. The space used to be home to the bakery Umanoff and Parsons. I don’t recall the exact dates, but I think they moved uptown around 2003/2004.
