Seen & Heard: New Gallery Update
••• The paper is off the windows at 61 Walker (formerly Walker Supply Co.); the word is that it’s going to be a gallery from someone who worked at a major Chelsea gallery.
••• The little building at 35 Walker still has a long way to go before it’s rehabilitated, but the façade is looking sharp.
••• If you haven’t poked around the database of Daytonian in Manhattan’s posts about the history of Tribeca buildings, now is as good a day as any. To whet your appetite, here are two photos from 1914 that I recently came across—they’re of 2-6 Varick, which DiM hasn’t covered yet, before and after it got cut in half. The first is by Wurts Bros. (X2010.7.1.1753), and the second is uncredited (X2010.11.2000); both are courtesy the Museum of City of New York. UPDATE: “The Ghostbusters firehouse on the left was also sliced to make room for the widening of Varick Street, but they rebuilt the western edge, so it is impossible to tell it was once twice as wide,” commented Robert Ripps on Facebook.
••• Perhaps construction is finally starting on 100 Franklin—P. noticed that various materials have been placed there.
