A Best Western on Walker Street

For every step forward in ChiBeCa, as the area past northeast Tribeca is sometimes called, usually with a wink, there are two steps back. The latest disappointment is the look of 88 Walker, between Cortlandt Alley and Lafayette, which we’ve known for a while now is going to be a nine-story hotel. According to the rendering—thanks to P. for the photo of it, posted on the recently installed plywood—it’ll be a mediocre-looking Best Western. Below: The lot last year, before the plywood went up.

  1. This project looks better than 90 percent of the buildings going up in TriBeCa.

  2. Is this going to be a best western plus, I love staying at pluses.

  3. And, apparently, painting neighboring buildings in matching tan, and reversing the direction of traffic on Walker Street…

  4. I don’t find it offensive at all, but how many hotels do we NEED?

    • They are an as-of-right residential use in a manufacturing district, so no delays for the developer trying to get a zoning variance, unlike for condos.

  5. Please God no do not perpetuate the name “Chibeca” …
