Finally, a Good Ice Cream Shop

Just yesterday, I was once again wondering why there’s no top-tier ice cream available below Canal. Grom is fine, but sometimes you just don’t want to go into the mall.

The ice cream gods—I believe there are 31—heard my prayer! Van Leeuwen has chosen the Seaport for its third Manhattan store, says the New York Post; specifically, the shop will be at 224 Front Street, where the Gilded Age clothing store most recently was. (One does wonder whether the stairs will overly frustrate the stroller demographic….) I can personally vouch for Van Leeuwen’s Salted Caramel and Cookies & Cream flavors, both of which are sold as pints at Whole Foods. And don’t scoff at cookies and cream! It’s a classic for a reason. Below: Founders Ben Van Leeuwen, Laura O’Neill, and Pete Van Leeuwen.

P.S. I’ll try asking whether it might open this summer.

  1. they sell a limited menu (usually chocolate, vanilla, and one other flavor) of Blue Marble Ice Cream at the Pier 25 concession stand by the skatepark during the summer
