Seen & Heard: Landmarc’s Limited Summer Hours

••• “Weird interior glow in the evening from the storefront at Washington and Desbrosses,” reports Archie. That space (27 Desbrosses) has been a mystery for a while. The word was it was being fixed up just because, not for any specific reason.

••• If I’m reading this correctly, Landmarc won’t be serving lunch or brunch this summer, and no dinner on Sunday and Monday.

••• Friends of Duane Park’s Neighbors Night is tomorrow, June 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.: “Bring your used books and swap with neighbors. At the end of the night we will pack any left and take them to the Strand; proceeds to benefit the park.”

••• Someone working on the restoration of the 293 Church wondered what I was talking about when I wished that the cornice could be repaired, seeing as how “the cornice is beautifully restored and in good condition. If you are referring to the opening on the left by the fire escape is just that, an opening. It is the access to the roof through the fire escape. It was built this way.” I responded that my assumption was that the cornice originally ran the width of the building, and that at some later date, a hole was cut into it to allow the fire escape to reach the roof. He said he’d look into it. If anyone else has historical photos of the building, do share. (And, yes, the building is looking really good!) UPDATE: Thanks, James, for finding an old photo. As he explains, “The fire escapes were early 20th century retrofits, coming out of labor laws spurred by the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and the Progressive movement.”

••• And I hear there’s still reason to hope the World Trade Center Greenmarket will open this month.

••• Kazumi Yoshida, who lives in Tribeca, has another show, Charade, opening at Cheryl Hazan Gallery tomorrow. Because I love his work, here are three pieces (some of which might be details…?) that Hazan has emailed out. I covet that monkey!

  1. The fire escapes were early 20th century retrofits, coming out of labor laws spurred by the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and the Progressive movement. Here is a link to an 1893 photo of 295 Church Street, showing the north line of windows of 293 at the right side of the photo. The cornice of 293 is complete where there now exists a gap.

  2. I think somebody(ies) might be living in the 27 Desbrosses space… I have seen them entering and exiting.
