The Final Design for Pier 26

The Hudson River Park Trust presented the final design for Pier 26 to Community Board 1. It doesn’t appear to have changed much since the presentation in fall of 2017, but it’s still pretty exciting and worth a look. Marine work starts this summer, with landscape work following in the fall; and by fall of 2020 the pier should be ready to open. I believe the fish-themed playground at the pier’s base gets constructed after that (because that area will be required for staging the work on the pier proper). As for the estuarium, ‘Only $10 million of the $50 million needed for the river study center is in hand,’ HRPT president Madelyn Wils said, according to the Tribeca Trib. So the organization is going to try to land a big sponsor, and if it can’t, it’ll rethink the plan.

    I hope that funds will be found for the estuarium and that the River Project, which had been in existence for over 30 years providing educational programs and exhibits of the living marine life of the Hudson, will be a major part of it. The River Project was instrumental in getting the waters of Hudson River Park established as an Estuarine Sanctuary. protected by environmental conservation law. Long time residents of Tribeca will remember the shed that held exhibits and sponsored activities on pier 26 before it was shut down for renovation. They are continuing their work from a space on pier 40 while waiting to return to pier 26. It would be wonderful for them to be able to continue their important work in a permanent new home.
