Tribeca Then and Now: Hubert, Collister, Beach, and Ericsson

Local artist and writer Jane Freeman has donated a cache of old Tribeca photos—the most recent seem to be from 1990, and most are from earlier—and as you’ll see, the neighborhood was a markedly different place back then. The photos were unlabeled and not in much of an order, so identifying the locations has been a challenge. (This series will end with the unidentifiable ones.) After I had the photos scanned, I realized that they wanted contemporary images for context. I occasionally tried to match Jane’s framing because I liked the comparison; other times, I felt it helped to see more than what she photographed.

  1. Very inspiring!
    Fantastic restorations.

  2. Jane…you are amazing. Look forward to these throwbacks. As mentioned above, it is very inspiring.

  3. Hi there – I used to live at 144 Chambers Street back in the late 70’s /early 80’s and I loved that area back then and everyone lived in a loft ( some rustic and basis – others were the “bees knees” if you know what I mean.

So many artists, musicians, actors/actresses and others trying to figure out what they wanted to do when they grew up.
Barnabas Rex, Puffy’s, and Mc Governs bar were the places to be back in the day – when I lived and worked there

Every year I get back to Brooklyn – I get myself over to that area to see what has changed and to be fair – I appreciate that time back then was there – more and more.

  4. Mr. Moskowitz was our landlord at 144 Chambers…
