In the News: Harvey Weinstein Turned Himself in at the 1st Precinct

  1. Hotels are now effectively the only residential use (albeit short-term) permissible in manufacturing districts without variances. That is what produced the Trump Soho condo/hotel zoning evasion scheme before it was thwarted by lawsuit.

    No one is manufacturing in Soho any longer, but local politicians and long-time tenant lobby groups have resisted changing the manufacturing zoning to prevent (or rather slow down) development. The City–desperate for more tax revenue–should recognize reality and change the M1-zoned district to allow residential use with an affordable housing provision if it wants to exclude hotels and transients/tourists. The manufacturers are not coming back.
