Tribeca Is Getting Another Barbershop

Gentleman’s Barber Spa is opening at 200 Church, in the storefront previously occupied by Birdbath bakery. It’s the brand’s second outpost; the original is in downtown White Plains. From the website:

Peter Palushi comes from a family of talented and professional barbers, so naturally he was destined to become one. His family moved from Kosovo to Croatia, where he spent his days as a young child watching and observing the different barbering techniques that would soon make him stand out amongst his peers. At age 9, he performed his first shave on one of his relatives and it was then that he knew he wanted to become a master barber. Peter’s professional career began when he turned 12 and became committed to being the best. At age 17, He won the national championship as the youngest Croatian barber. […] He worked for some of the best establishments in the world such as Truefitt & Hill, which originally served as the main barbers for the British Royal family and New York’s prestigious, The Art of Shaving.

And from Westchester magazine’s Best of Westchester 2016:

Barbering is truly a craft at this part-throwback, part-contemporary barbershop featuring warm-foam straight-razor shaves with Art of Shaving products, refurbished 1950s Belmont chairs, and an antique metal-plate ceiling with skylight. Owner and master barber Peter Palushi will layer and shape your hair for a top-notch cut. Prepare for lots of compliments!

The Westchester location offers haircuts (including for kids), shaves, spa services such as massages and facials, and even “mole and birthmark removal.” It’s not clear whether the Tribeca barbershop will be large enough for all of that.

  1. Kind of sad. Our barber on Lispenard Street is looking for a new place to set up shop. The shop has been there for well over the 40 years I have lived in Tribeca and gives a good all around haircut for a reasonable price. But the building has been sold and will probably be torn down to build a taller building. A fact that is altogether too sad for the disappearing Mom and Pop businesses in our neighborhood. If anyone knows of a place where Ilya (Leo) can find a location in Tribeca be sure to let him know. He is at 33 Lispenard. Hard to miss. The only barber on Lispenard.

  2. Is this guy here legally or is it because he’s not from a country where they speak Spanish that it doesn’t matter? Rents are expensive. Most businesses have closed. Where’s the money from?

    • Should we insist on seeing his papers before we let him into the neighborhood?

    • I have been going to Peter’s White Plains location since I moved into the neighborhood four years ago. Him & his staff are extremely professional and provide amazing service. I won’t go anywhere else to get my haircut. I’m happy that Peter is able to expand and achieve the “American Dream” – something that our country was founded on. Gentlemans Barber Spa will be an amazing addition to the culture of Tribeca.

    • I too am a years-long client of Peter’s. His independently-owned shop in White Plains is spotless and classic, and his and his stylists’ skills are unparalleled.
It is a great small business that supports great causes and supports other small businesses. It will be a great addition, and I for one am excited to be able to get the kind of service in the city that I get in Westchester.

  3. I hope Sara Rosen is kidding because if she isn’t we’ll need to see her papers AND her original long form birth certificate.
    I can’t tell what is a joke and what isn’t anymore…

  4. This is so awesome! I make the commute to WP to see him at his mom and pop shop there. So glad he is returning to the city!
