Gyro Joint Opening on Church

The Church Street space that was most recently Papa Kitchen (and before that, Eastward Poke and Church Street Kitchen) is being turned into a restaurant called This Is Gyro. And that’s all we know, because there’s nothing online yet. I suppose I need to point this out, because gyro and shawarma don’t have the presence in this city that they used to. (At least in storefronts—carts are another matter.) “A gyro or gyros* is a Greek dish made from meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie,” says Wikipedia. “Originally lamb, in Greece it is now most often pork, or chicken, while a mixture of beef and lamb is common in the U.S. and other countries. It is usually served wrapped or stuffed in a flatbread such as pita, with tomato, onion, tzatziki sauce, and sometimes french fries. Like the related dishes shawarma and tacos al pastor, it is derived from the doner kebab.” (*In Greek, the singular is apparently gyros.) Presumably the restaurant is pronouncing it yee-roh.

P.S. Love how they’ve left the Health Department’s “A” grade in the window….

  1. OMG! I cant explain the excitement when I stepped into this place and saw their menu. Everything was my type of food. I love Turkish food and this is not your normal fast food gyro place. Its more on the fancy side and clean freshly made food. I ordered the Adnana kebab platter that came with rice, kebab, salad, hummus, and pita break with two sauce on the side. It was delicious and price was worth it and perfect for the taste. I really hope this one stays in this place because this is what Tribeca really needed. Wish them all the best.
