Fashion line Scanlan Theodore was founded in 1987 by Fiona Scanlan and Gary Theodore. Over the subsequent three decades, Scanlan moved on and the company kept growing: It now has 19 boutiques across Australia and, with the recent debut across from Duane Park, three in New York City. Women are said to love the brand’s sophistication, timelessness, and flexibility—with a change of shoes, an outfit can go from work to the park to dinner. Most of the fabrics are European, along with Australian merino wool and cotton. Especially popular are crepe knit separates in classic cuts, with a bit of edge that Scanlan Theodore updates seasonally. Unlike at many stores these days, everything—including handbags, shoes, and belts—is the brand’s own. And items are made in limited numbers, for increased exclusivity. Whether you drop in or make an appointment for personal-styling advice, prepare to spend a few extra minutes admiring the chic transformation of the former Shoofly space.
Scanlan Theodore is at 42 Hudson (between Thomas and Duane); 212-406-3200; scanlantheodore.com.
