In the News: Inside the WeWork Elementary School

••• This is a new rendering for 100 Franklin (although it’s not super different from the previous one). YIMBY says it’s known as the JR Building, after the artist who did the paste-up murals there, but a rep for the developer, DDG, says that’s not so. Also of note: “The hand-laid facade will be comprised of bricks by Denmark’s Petersen Tegl, masonry detailing, and greenery incorporated into the design by DDG. Keeping in line with its artsy past, DDG commissioned Charlotte Taylor, a Paris-based artist, to create pieces to be installed with the new residences.”

••• A New York Post article about WeGrow, WeWork’s first elementary school (on Beach Street), is likely to provoke a reaction. Take this:

That holistic philosophy, and an emphasis on kindness and community, is what appealed to Dami Okuboyejo, a former teacher who sends her twin 4-year-old sons to WeGrow. “I’m really not big on academics… I don’t know what the Pythagorean theorem has done for me,” said the Harlem resident, who has her own stationery business. “At the end of the day, it’s all about being able to communicate with people.”

UPDATE: I assumed the school was in Tribeca, but it’s actually in Chelsea. On one hand, that’s what I get for skimming. On the other hand, when WeWork’s push into education was first announced back in October of 2017, the admissions director wrote that the school would be at 53 Beach Street after an incubation period on Reade. My current understanding is that WeWork is no longer involved in the Tribe School, if it’s even still happening on Beach Street. (And given that a Reade Street preschool was recently looking at the former Nobu space, I’d venture that it’s not.)

••• “A Manhattan man dropped his sparkling $347,000 Ferrari off at a Tribeca parking garage only to pick it up four hours later and find its door bashed in and side-view mirror missing. […] The garage workers have refused to show him where and how it happened, he said. Rosen is now suing City Parking LLC, which is on the ground floor of his 56 Leonard St. building, alleging it initially agreed to foot the bill for the damage, until they realized how much it would cost. [$19,500.] ‘This is the reason we don’t want cars like yours in the garage,’ a City Parking manager allegedly told Rosen as the incident unfolded. ‘This is one of the most expensive, exclusive buildings in the city—what are people supposed to drive, Chevrolets?’ Rosen fumed.” —New York Post

“German discount grocer Lidl will take over Best Market’s 27 stores in New York and New Jersey, including 24 on Long Island, deepening its push into the U.S. market. […]

“The Best Market stores not on Long Island are in Harlem, Manhattan; Astoria, Queens; Holmdel, New Jersey; and a 28th location, in Newington, Connecticut. The Connecticut store is not part of the Lidl deal; Best Market has not responded to inquiries about the future of that store.”

  2. After years of parking my cars in various Tribeca garages and having them damaged (non were Ferraris), I have moved our current vehicle to Pier 40. This garage is self parking so the risk of damage by attendants moving it does not exist.

  3. The new rendering for 100 Franklin seems to be missing the work that was going to be done to the triangle median separating Church and 6th Ave. Is that still in the plan?

  4. Having used Lidl often in Europe, I would welcome their coming to TriBeca so I hope that they do re-open the store on Greenwich but in view of the attitude of the landlords, it does not seem likely but we can hope that there will be some competition for Wholefoods in the area. Trader Joe’s on 6th Ave is great but it is a bit of a hike with heavy groceries.
