Seen & Heard: New York Academy of Art’s New Facade

••• “Singer, actress and comedienne Ana Gasteyer is featured in Holiday Tipple, a follow-up to her popular cabaret show I’m Hip! on Friday, December 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Schimmel Center at Pace University. Gasteyer and her jazzy ensemble will celebrate the season with swinging holiday favorites and toe-tapping holiday tunes.”

••• P. sent over a photo of the New York Academy of Art’s new facade.

••• From Babesta: “Each year local downtown residents look forward to Babesta’s yummy-food laden holiday tree in Brookfield Place’s Hall of Trees. This year, Babesta decided to kick it up a notch. Every day from December 1 to 24, the podium in front of the tree will feature a new challenge for the day, where participants can win “yummy” prizes and more. Challenges will also be posted on Instagram. The Yummy World collection of plush foods with eyes has long been a popular gift at Babesta, as the foods connect with all ages.”

••• And there’s a Christmas celebration at Washington Market Park on December 8. Be a sport and bring a toy (presumably new and unwrapped) to donate. In fact, why not take your kid(s) to one of our neighborhood toy stores to let him/her/them pick something out to donate, as a reminder that the holiday isn’t just about getting a sleighload of gifts.

••• I posted the answers to the first three installments of Dead Restaurants: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. The two below—from Part 1 and Part 4, respectively—have yet to be guessed.

Serving Spanish food, XXXXXX is among the most designed restaurants in the area—from the wall of mirrors to the colored LEDs to the oil paintings to the lizard wallpaper (which, in a trompe l’oeil effect, appears to be bedazzled with rhinestones but is actually 2-D).

A popular spot for breakfast, lunch, coffee break, or working for hours, XXXXXX is a handsome café with brick walls, big windows, and a mix of individual and communal tables. The food is mostly premade, with a range of salads, sandwiches, and so forth (it now serves egg dishes on weekends). It’s spacious, and therefore one of the few places in Tribeca where you can reliably snag a seat.
