New Kid on the Block: Lola Tribeca

This is a bit of a long story, but stick with me because it involves a popular local doc, a store opening and an Australian.

So the baby is a girl, the OB told Rachael Elderfield after her scans. Pretty soon she had an in utero name too: Lola. The family was living in London for the year, raising their son Jasper, who was then 2. They came back for the last few weeks of Rachael’s pregnancy, where local doc Austin Chen delivered this line:

“Lola has a penis.”

Hudson arrived a month later, hardly a consolation prize. But now Rachael is getting her Lola. Taking over Cass Lilien’s 50-square-foot shop at 24 Harrison St. today is Lola Tribeca, a jewelry and gift store that will feature Cass’ Morse code necklaces as well as merch from local businesses like A Friend Made.

Rachael (part of the Aussie invasion of Tribeca along with husband Cameron) is also a jeweler and repped for Aussie retailer Elizabeth Childs in the Village pre-kids. Her background is in wholesale and retail fashion. She’s given the shop a reno, and everything there – save the rug and the desk – are for sale. There’s gold jewelry from Mexico City; hand embroidered pillows from San Miguel; and to cap it all off, car fresheners that hang from your rearview mirror in sandalwood scent. “The idea is great gifts at great prices,” she said. There’s earrings as low as $39, gold and diamond jewelry that reaches up to $1,000 and lots of cute stuff in between. The shop opened today, and hours are 11 to 6 Monday through Saturday, noon to 5 on Sunday.
