In the News: Jared Eng indicted on second-degree murder charges

PAULA CHIN’S SON INDICTED
The Post has a jail-house interview with Jared Eng, the Vestry Street man who is accused of disposing of his mother’s dead body in their Morristown, NJ backyard. Police have not charged anyone yet in the murder of Paula Chin, who owned and lived at 17 Vestry for 32 years. And another update from the Post: Eng has been indicted for second-degree murder.

MEN’S GLEE CLUB SEEKING SINGERS
The Trib notes that the Downtown Glee Club, a men’s singing group founded 90 years ago, is seeking new (male) singers. The website profiles each current member; I’m including this one here since it seems to sum up the club so well and because it almost made me a little teary:
Joseph Martin / Bass / Conductor from 2013-2016 / Inducted as an Honorary Member in 2018 / Favorite musician: Eminem / Favorite musical: Company by Sondheim
My parents inspired me to pursue music. My father was a church musician and medieval ethics professor at St. John’s in Queens and my mother is currently chairperson of the English department at Vaughn College, also in Queens.
The Down Town Glee Club is the realest group of people I know. I cannot deny that this group of men were sincere, transparent, and forthright. There’s a lot of artificiality in the art world, and, with experience, I’ve come to appreciate how genuine performers, no matter what level they may be musically, are the only performers that have a shot at making actual art. Mad props to DTGC. Rest in Peace Gladstone Trott.

COLLEGE KIDS THINK OUR TARGET SUCKS
The kids at NYU’s student blog had a nearly exhaustive review of the city’s Targets, where ours got the lowest tier ranking for having “all of the branding but none of the soul.” The Bronx Terminal Market got ranked highest for seeming the most like Middletown, NY. —NYULocal

  1. “Soul”? We are talking about Target?
Target may have its virtues, but “soul” seems an unlikely candidate. Then again, I’ve never been inside a target. I prefer K-mart.

  2. It’s Paula Chin, not Paul.
