March 14, 2019 Restaurant/Bar News, Shopping
Eric McCarthy, the former executive chef at Tamarind, is opening Paisley in the old Dylan Prime space at 429 Greenwich at Laight. McCarthy is originally from Goa and trained there at the Institute of Hotel Management before jumping on a Carnival Cruise Lines as a sous chef. When the ship dropped him in New York in 2002, he opened Brick Lane on 6th Street and got a great review from the Times in 2002. He then went on to Sapphire in Columbus Circle and finally Tulsi, where his work there earned the restaurant a Michelin star.
Here’s McCarthy talking about his childhood in Goa: “On a Sunday I would assist my mom grandmother and other members of my family by cutting, chopping and most importantly grinding spices (fresh Masala) for curry in a very traditional technique — the grinding stone. It was a manual process as the only way since there was no exposure to fancy blenders or processors. My first dish was cooking baathache sheeth – typically a locally harvested red grain boiled rice. As a child I sat alongside my grandmother and helped her grate fresh coconut from the shell the old-fashioned way.”
The plan is to open in May; CB1 approved the liquor license last night for 11 to 1a weekdays; till 2a on weekends. It will have 72 seats in the dining room, 12 at the bar. The entrance will be on Greenwich. The menu as sketched out in their proposal is HUGE.

Jenni Kayne, whose California-inspired home goods store is at 20 Harrison, has published her first book – an entertaining manual called Pacific Natural (Rizzoli) – and to celebrate she is hosting a book signing cocktail party on March 21 from 6 to 8p. The event will be catered by west~bourne, who will be serving organic wine and other treats; Kin Euphorics is hosting a Bliss Bar; and there will be a DIY activity as well. Kayne opened her Tribeca store in 2017; she started the company in 2001 when she was 19 years old and the lifestyle blog Rip & Tan not long after that.
