New Kid on the Block: Jenni Kayne

The new Jenni Kayne shop on Harrison marks the brand’s first foray into New York City—the other five outposts are in California—and a turning point in general. It’s not a store, per se; you can browse, and you can try things on, but you can’t take anything with you. Instead, the staff will help you purchase online, with free ground shipping (or free expedited shipping for orders over $250).

Kayne launched in 2001 when she was just 19 years old, and now the line has expanded to include women’s apparel, accessories (bags are a recent addition), and decor, such as pillows, blankets, and candles, with dishware and linens to follow soon. A handful of other brands—Eric Bonnin ceramics, Canvas flatware, Auskin sheepskin throws—are interspersed here and there.

Kayne chose Tribeca because her favorite hotel in the city has long been the Greenwich, and the neighborhood’s relaxed, family atmosphere jibes with the brand’s California aesthetic. The bi-level space, formerly Matt Bernson’s store, worked well because downstairs can be used as a showroom for media and wholesalers.

The store is planning on hosting lots of events, including one next Tuesday (November 14) to which you’re invited. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tenoverten will offer complimentary manicures and Nourish Kitchen + Table will provide nibblybits. (RSVP to events@jennikayne.com.) Starting that same day, look for Kayne’s Airstream trailer—kitted out with the new home line—parked outside for a week.

Jenni Kayne is at 20 Harrison (between Hudson and Greenwich); 646-968-9995; jennikayne.com.
