In the News: Man tries to rob bank on Chambers

MAN ASKED TO ROB CAPITAL ONE
Police report that a man came in to the Capital One at Chambers and West Broadway on Monday and asked a teller for money. When she walked away, he left. (Does not sound like the work of a pro.) This all took place around 1. After getting a tip from T., I walked in there around 3 and asked the teller if there had been a robbery attempt and she said no. I guess that’s the protocol? Either way, by then all was quiet and the place had the usual buzz of tellers and customers coming and going. –Patch

LOCAL RESIDENT PRESENTS FIRST PLAY
Jean Grillo, a Tribeca resident for the last few decades and a member of CB1 and the former Democratic district leader, has a new play up at The Strawberry Festival called CRADLE. The play is about a 16-year-old Muslim girl living in London in 2017 who becomes infatuated with ISIS and is determined to run away and join them. Her immigrant mother, determined to assimilate, is stunned by her daughter’s actions and will do anything to stop her. Performances are this weekend at Theatre 54. –The Broadsheet

ONLY NUMBER TWO
The second priciest home to go into contract last week was a condo asking $18.8 million at the Robert A.M. Stern-designed 30 Park Place in Tribeca, also home to the Four Seasons Hotel. Of the 27 contracts signed last week, 23 were condos, three were co-ops and one was a townhouse. –Mansion Global (FYI, Mansion Global is a product of Barron’s and owned by Dow Jones, but separate from the WSJ’s Mansion.)

MORE ON FIDI STREETS PLAN
Streetsblog digests the Financial District Neighborhood Association’s plan for “Amsterdaming” most of Lower Manhattan.

MINUS TRUMP = REVENUE
Crain’s reported that once the Trump Soho changed its name to The Dominick, things started to turn around: “Dominick’s revenue per available room, or revpar, rose more than 20% from a year earlier, recovering fully from a prolonged slump. The hotel’s average nightly rate shot up $51, or 20%, compared with a citywide average increase of just 2% among its competitors. And the 391-room, 46-story hotel booked 7,000 more room nights in 2018 than in 2017.”

  1. If most lower Manhattan streets are closed to traffic, how long would it take for an ambulance to get from, say, Chambers and West Broadway to Beckmann Hospital, or whatever it is called these days (not that I’d ever want to go there)? This might also impede fire engines, but the hospital is deep within the pedestrian zone.

Also, while cyclists in Amsterdam can be a bit aggressive, at least they follow the rules, unlike delivery people, messengers, etc.
