Seen & Heard: Midtown Italian coming to Duane?

THE OLD MAX SPACE…
…looks like it has a new tenant: Galo Nero, which has a (Italian) mother ship on 44th and Ninth. Awaiting a response…

GOOD WORKS DEPARTMENT
Heard: Longtime locals Steve Schall and Alyce Russo are among the hosts for the May 2 annual gala for University Settlement, which runs dozens of good programs in early childhood education, youth development, mental health, eviction prevention, ESL and senior services. The organization was the first settlement house in the US, founded in 1886. Steve is vice president of the board and has been involved with them for more than 40 years.

GOINGS-ON AT JAY AND STAPLE?
S. sends this snap of the paper coming off the windows at the corner store at Jay and Staple (I am pretty sure it is 10 Jay??). Will stop by soon and see what’s doing, unless anyone already knows the answer…

THE FUTURE OF PIER 40
Heard: Loads of neighborhood kids showed up at a hearing for Pier 40 to tell CB2 that they depend on the fields to not just play sports but, as one kid said, “to share an experience with your friends.” The bigger people also spoke up for rugby, water-dependent uses (ie, boats and beaches), fencing and track and field.

HAPPY HOUR AT SEAPORT ROOF
The Seaport’s rooftop cocktail bar R17 just relaunched a classic cocktail hour deal, Tuesday to Friday from 4-7p. Cocktails are $12, select wines are $9 and select beer is $6.

165 DUANE LOFT
I had to run some of Amy Bonomi’s listing pics since I love this building, and I think it is one of the most iconic in Tribeca, and Tom Miller has already done a great historical write up (former coconut factory!), and because it gives me a great excuse to run this cool pic from the municipal archives of the early Duane Park days when you couldn’t escape a cobble. Plus the apartment has a look that is a refreshing antidote to all the granite and stainless.

  1. Yes..the space on Jay St. seems to be open for business..customers inside the whole thing (I was in a hurry and couldn’t go in myself) also Sadly seems like Tribeca Beauty Spa on Harrison has closed? The signage is down and it appears locked up.

    • Hi Julie,

This is Nadia, owner of Tribeca Beauty Spa. We are still open! Unfortunately, our sign blew down in a storm a few months ago and we are working with the building owners to get that back up. Tribeca is home to us (we love this community) and we have no intention of leaving any time soon :)

  2. Cynthia Rowley design studio has moved into the Jay St. space

  3. Does anyone know what’s going on with Tribeca Tap House? Has it closed?

  4. Apologies for commenting here that Tribeca Beauty Spa had closed. Apparently it was just a new security door installed for after hours..happy to report they are OPEN!

  5. Cynthia Rowley design is moving in on Jay and Staple. Cynthia herself was there doing manual labor and setting up the other night, so I chatted with her. Couldn’t have been nicer. Looks like it’s a design/showroom/special pieces type of thing. I don’t think they will be manufacturing anything there though, except for special orders maybe? Nice addition to the neighborhood.
