Seen & Heard: Before it was the Odeon….

BEFORE IT WAS THE ODEON…
…it was the Towers Cafeteria. J. sent this wonderful shot. She was the owner of the building when it was sold in 1980. Don’t click on this Vanity Fair story, written in 2005 for the Odeon’s 25th anniversary, unless you have time to waste – and enjoy – going down a rabbit hole of local ‘80s history.

SIDEWALK SHED REPORT: DAYLIGHT ON CHAMBERS
G. sends these snaps of the exposed façade of 108 Chambers. What a relief. Almost don’t remember that corner without a shroud.

HOT WHEELS
Seen: N. sends this pic from Brookfield’s first Manhattan Concours – a show for car fanatics if there ever was one. There were winners in all sorts of classes, but there was one that went to the car that made the greatest impact on the scene in Battery Park City: a 1953 Alfa Romeo. Other winners: a 1935 Triumph, a 1967 Porsche 911S, a 1967 Corvette, a 1965 Rolls. The best in show went to the 1937 BMW.

HEADS UP
Heard: D. called to say he was strolling down Park Place on Friday night to pick up his kid when he the gal in front of him was splashed with what looked like wet concrete. As he passed by again on the way back, he and about 15 other pedestrians all got hit as wet concrete rained down from the construction site of 45 Park Place. He said it sounded like a water cannon going off. They ran for it.

SOLIDCORE COMING TO SOHO
Solidcore, supposedly Michelle Obama’s favorite workout (I did read her book and she recalls how she would sneak out of the White House to take classes) is coming to 261 Hudson just north of Broome. The company describes classes this way (the brackets are theirs): 50 minutes of high-intensity, low-impact, slow and controlled movements on our resistance-based [machines]. Classes are intense and purposefully sequenced to work your muscles to [failure]. [solidcore] may resemble other Pilates classes, but we assure you, we are unlike any workout you’ve experienced before. Each move at [solidcore] has the foundation of a plank, squat, or lunge, with a plethora of variations to help strengthen your entire body.

  1. Look at the Odeon, everything’s the same except the cars and the cobblestone streets
