Seen & Heard: Fleetweek floating campaign

LETTING THE FREAK FLAG FLY
N. spotted this intrepid campaigner paddling his sea kayak out among the ships entering the harbor for Fleetweek — clearly unaware that he is in hostile waters.

AMAZON GO WILL TAKE YOUR CASH
Inc. reports that the Amazon Go store in the Brookfield mall will accept cash, but it won’t be as smooth a transaction as using the app. Shoppers must alert an Amazon employee near the front gate that they aren’t paying with a card or phone. From there, an attendant steps in to assist with the transaction the way a traditional cashier would.

#STARRINGJOHNCHO
Pearl River Mart’s second floor gallery has a show open through July 7 featuring work by William Yu, the digital strategist who created the viral #StarringJohnCho campaign. Yu manipulates images and videos using “deepfake” artificial intelligence to imagine a world where Asian American leads in Hollywood are the norm. His show at Pearl River is the first time his work is being presented in an immersive multimedia environment. Yu created #StarringJohnCho in response to a succession of films that featured whitewashed Asian characters (Ghost in the Shell, Aloha, Doctor Strange) and Academy Award host Chris Rock’s “joke” of using three Asian children to pose as PricewaterhouseCooper accountants.

CELEBRITY WATCH
People magazine caught Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp, both local residents (Ryan is at 443 Greenwich) strolling past Washington Market Park. The two are recently engaged.
