Infrastructure Nerd Alert: View the bridge installation

For those of you who love to watch cranes move big stuff (I know you’re out there) or who are willing to let their 3-year-old boys out after midnight, Battery Park City is setting up a viewing station for the installation of the new pedestrian bridge over the highway. Starting tonight, 1 a.m. on June 1 and again at 1 a.m. on June 2, the public can watch from West Thames and Battery Place as the two spans are picked up and lowered into place. (Thanks to N. for the pic of the span’s first leg of its journey.)

* NB: the time is subject to change.

Also, all of West Thames Street and the South End Avenue cul-de-sac will be illuminated to simulate daylight for construction and safety purposes. Residents with windows facing onto these streets may want to draw their shades during these periods.

  1. Why would only 3 year old boys be interested in seeing a bridge installation? I’m a female bridge engineer with 10 years experience and my 2 year old daughter is very interested in her toy trucks and blocks.

    • Yeah, you’re right. And I am busted for my gender norming. But I only stood outside constructions sites (for hours) with one of my three kids, and that was a boy.
