Loft Peeping: Cary Paik and Esther Lee’s penthouse at 13 Jay

The Times has a feature on the 13 Jay penthouse of architect Cary Paik and Esther Lee, the global chief marketing officer at MetLife. The couple and their son are moving out of the city, so the fifth floor triplex — they added two floors in 2012 — is for sale for $13.5 million, listed with Sophie Ravet and Mike Lubin of Brown Harris Stevens. The photo credit goes to Matt Vacca Photography. The apartment is 4,700 square feet with three bedrooms, four full bathrooms, two half-bathrooms and 1,600 feet of outdoor space. And other than that, it is just a fine specimen.

The couple met when Esther hired Cary to renovate her Soho loft.

Some cool details:

  • the 24-foot-long heart pine beams are salvaged from the original roof
  • the “branchlike” light fixture is by the Canadian company Bocci
  • the dining table was made with leftover rooftop boards
  • the dining chairs are Hans Wegner CH20
  • the chandelier is by local designer David Weeks, who was a classmate of Paik’s at Rhode Island School of Design
  • a wood-burning fireplace is buried inside the “trunk,” which runs through the core of the house
  • a guillotine window lifts automatically to the smaller terrace
  • there’s also a gas fireplace
