Ticker-tape parade for women’s soccer team tomorrow!

Whether you love a parade or not, one’s coming: starting tomorrow at 9:30 at The Battery, to honor the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team — FIFA World Cup champions after their recent stint in France.

The Downtown Alliance is now the steward for ticker-tape parades, and since there’s no longer any ticker tape, the folks there bag up and distribute one TON of shredded paper for those lucky enough to still be able to open a window along Broadway.

The team will then proceed to City Hall, where they will get keys to the city and hearty congrats from the mayor. They should be at City Hall by 10:30 or 11, if you are planning your trip east. The Downtown Connection bus service will be suspended for the day.

  1. This whole women’s soccer team thing seems rather sexist. Am I right, guys?

    • Totally agree. Singling our the women and continuing to emphasize that they are WOMEN seems wrong. They should be treated the same as the men. Drives,e crazy every time someone starts talking about them as being so special. This is demeaning to women. They should be recognized for being great soccer players and leave it at that.

  2. You are wrong Smithers. You must know that.

  3. I’m saddened by the lack of diversity on a team being hailed as role models. 22 women, of which 19 are white and only 3 are women of color. No Hispanic women, no Asian women, and none from the Middle East or South Asia. Not representative of who we are and who we aspire to be as a nation. And not as diverse as the men’s team. See for yourself.
