Schoolhouse Electric has closed permanently

Schoolhouse, the quirky lighting restoration company that had one of its few retail outlets in the country on Vestry, has closed permanently as of yesterday. Thanks for the heads up from MG, and the confirmation from the company rep, Josh, who said: “We’re grateful for our incredible run of 14 years in New York and we’ll continue to keep a physical presence in the city through our trade program. Although we decided not to renew our lease in our current location, retail remains an important part of our brand and future strategy.”

He added, “It really was a beautiful store, we are sad to see it go.” I totally agree. Loved their lighting — which is how the company started — and bedding and unique gifts. The place screamed “Portland” but somehow their stuff worked here in the big city. Another big sigh.

  1. So disappointing. Loved that little store – a true TriBeCa gem.

  2. So sad to see this – they were a terrific addition to the neighborhood, and a great place for housewarming gifts and other fun home curios. Another sign of the times…

  3. Last fall, Schoolhouse opened a spectacular location in Pittsburgh: https://www.schoolhouse.com/blogs/stories/the-next-chapter-schoolhouse-pittsburgh

  4. Very sad to see such a great store go. Spent a lot of time and money there. And always delighted with the purchases. Staff was great. Bummer they left. Wish they’d at least get a store in Brooklyn.

  5. Gorgeous store – loved buying there (website’s shipping costs often dissuade me).
