Curly haired women unite: Lorraine Massey opens on W. Broadway

S. spotted her first: Lorraine Massey, who first took over the curly world with DevaChan in 1993, has opened a new venture called Spiral (x,y,z) in the former Calypso space at 139 West Broadway. More to come when she and I get a chance to chat, but in the meantime, open the door of the shop just to get a whiff of some delicious scent she was infusing in there, or watch the video below which had me feeling sorry for myself and my straight hair.

Her website describes the new shop as “a salon and generative space” that also includes the introduction of a new line of artisanal hair care products called CurlyWorld. “Each CurlyWorld product is generously infused with high quality botanicals that include the resurrection plant, bamboo extract, aloe vera, and coconut water — all of which help to nourish and protect your hair, as it’s something you wear everyday of your life.” (That explains the scent.)

Spiral (x,y,z) will also be a central hub for classes, workshops and “sink tanks.” Massey has written two critically acclaimed books: “Curly Girl: The Handbook” and “Silver Hair: The Handbook.” “CurlyGirl Kids” will be arriving in May 2020.

  1. If I had any hair I’d go there.

  2. I’ve been there and I loved it! Lorraine is amazing.

  3. Lorraine is an amazing person, over several decades, best haircuts ever…..

  4. I’ve been a fan of Lorraine’s since her early curly days in SoHo – she is the mane maven!! Thrilled to have her back downtown with her amazing associate Ed, who does killer color (and is equally fabulous ;)).

  5. Awesome, a new curly book coming out! Wish I was near where the salon is! I still haven’t found a CHA near enough to me to trust anyone doing my hair. But me doing my own unicorn cut. I haven’t got brave enough to cut curl by curl yet. I have access to her very first book it’s at my library but don’t have any personal books of my own yet! Ginger
