In the News: Protections for 100 Centre

PROTECTIONS FOR 100 CENTRE — AND HOW ABOUT 111 CENTRE?
The Broadsheet reports that CB1 is trying to get the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission to landmark 100 Centre St, the Criminal Courts Building. They would also like to see some protections for other significant buildings outside the historic district: 80 Centre Street, 137 Centre Street, 139 Centre Street. This came out of the White Street jail plan, since 100 Centre is on the same lot. But if I had my choices, I would add 111 Centre to the list — built in 1960 with this gorgeous frieze, below.

RENTING WHILE THE SALE MARKET LANGUISHES
G. sent over this story from The Real Deal that covers the large residential buildings downtown that have gotten “inventory loans” to cover them while sales languish. So far it’s 111 Murray, 50 West and now the Clock Tower. Since units are not selling, the buildings are converting them to rentals hoping the market comes back in a few years and they can sell the units. In the meantime the rental stream is used to pay interest for the loans, which are then used to pay off the construction debt. Yipes.

MORE ON EXTINCTION REBELLION
If you want to know more about the folks that had the die-in down by the bull last week, The Intercept has this story: “Since the movement was born in the United Kingdom one year ago, it has grown to a network of at least 485 groups in 72 countries. Many observers have responded with a reaction similar to the one elicited by 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg: Finally, someone is truthfully confronting scientists’ apocalyptic climate forecasts with the urgency they deserve.”

DRAIN YOUR LYMPH IN SOHO
Vogue reports that the popular LA “lymphatic drainage destination” that resculpts people’s bodies with what looks to me like a torture device from Doctor Who (ie, low budget) has taken a pop-up space in Soho: “Nestled in the back of a designer showroom five floors above the hubbub of Mercer Street, Ricari Studios doesn’t bear the neon signs or in-your-face storefronts all too familiar to Soho these days. Instead, the only indication wellness seekers have arrived is a single jasmine-scented bed.”
