Seen & Heard: The latest at 415 Broadway

THE LATEST FOR 415 BROADWAY?
The quirky department store is out at the National City Bank building at 415 Broadway and Canal; a fitness place may be in? The window facing Broadway now has a sign for Shock Therapy, which has clients workout with Electro Muscle Stimulation (EMS) suits — similar to Nova Fitness on Leonard. The company was founded in 2018 by a Turkish psychologist and it has another location on the Upper East Side.

137 VARICK IS GONE
T. sent this cool but sad animated photo of 137 Varick – the former Scott Jordan showroom – coming down floor by floor to make way for Disney’s new headquarters at Spring and Vandam. He took it from the 11th Floor of 155 6th Ave. I couldn’t run since the file is too big, but you can see here what “progress” looks like in the before and after.

PAINTING CHAMBERS STREET IN THE CHILL
Lucky they were using oils. These two guys were out this past weekend in the below-freezing temps, capturing a slice of Chambers.

MULCH YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE
The Department of Sanitation will pick up trees curbside for mulching between Jan. 6 and 17. No plastic bags (I have never understood why people buy a massive piece of plastic to wrap a tree in just so it can sit on the sidewalk.) NYC Parks will also host its annual Mulchfest through Jan. 11; the only location downtown is Bowling Green.

  1. They wrap it in plastic to avoid dropping lots of needles in public hallways, elevators and lobbies. Some buildings (including mine) require this so that the building staff doesn’t have to clean up the mess.

  2. Re: Xmas tree mulching. Many buildings, including ours, require that all trees be bagged before leaving the apartment. It reduces the mess of hundreds of dropped needles that the porter would be tasked to clean up.

  3. Where can I get Christmas tree bags for their disposal?
