In the News: Local pushback on NYC ferry service

PUSHBACK ON FERRY TO MIDTOWN
For more details on the debate about the new NYC Ferry route coming through BPC from SI on its way to Midtown, see the Broadsheet. In short, neighbors are concerned about the noise and air pollution coming from the addition of 60 trips a day at the terminal, which will run from 6a to midnight. There’s also a shift in the landing spot on the Staten Island side, and perhaps some tricky landing issues here at the BPC dock.

BIG DONUT NEWS!
CNN Business reports that Krispy Kreme is planning a 2020 expansion, with a renovated Penn Station location, a new store at 37th and 6th that opened this week, a Times Square location coming in May and a Fidi location scheduled to open by the end of the year, along with the UWS, Harlem and the Bronx. The 80-year-old donut brand opened six stores here in the late aughts, and closed all but Penn in 2009. They’ve now been bought and are trying again, despite our more refined eating habits. “Our philosophy is everything in moderation,” said the company president. (The family has tried to make amends for its Nazi past.)

ASSEMBLY RACE ENDORSEMENT
The Trib reports that the Downtown Independent Democrats political club has endorsed Fid resident Grace Lee for the former Sheldon Silver assembly seat, choosing her over incumbent Yuh-Line Niou. (The district runs south of Vesey and east of Lafayette, from river to river.) The primary is June 23.

  1. I’m told the FiDi location for Krispy Kreme will be inside the Fulton Center.

  2. It should be noted the endorsement of Grace Lee by the Downtown Independent Democrats was by a very narrow vote and there is very strong support for current Assemblyperson Yuh-Line Niou.

  3. A few of the porters and maintenance guys take the ferry down from the bronx. Expanding it is only a good thing. Cleaner boats? yes we need that. but better to have a ferry than not.
