Seen & Heard: Eataly is open and serving to-go

EATALY IS OPEN FOR TAKEOUT AND GROCERY
This from GM Mark Healey, via M.: “Our market remains open and our shelves are packed. Even though the Oculus is closing, we have permission to continue receiving deliveries. In other words, we’re not going anywhere! Please keep in mind that no food can be consumed at Eataly. (I certainly never thought I’d say that!)”

  • New store hours are from 8a to 9p.
  • Lavazza coffee bar is re-opened but now located at the front wine bar with a more basic menu. Hours are from 8a to 4p
  • Rotisserie counter is re-opened selling rotisserie chickens only. Hours are from 12p to 7p.
  • Pizza al Pala counter is re-opened. Hours are from 12p to 7p.
  • They also now have received special permission to sell wine, which is displayed at the front of the store.

FUNDRAISER FOR MAXWELL’S STAFF
From the folks at Maxwell’s: “Due to the Covid-19 Virus and the government shutting down all bars and restaurants in New York City, our staff is left without an income for the foreseeable future. We are not staying open for delivery or takeout and therefore our entire staff is in need of financial help.” To make a donation, find the GoFundMe page here.

HOUSEMAN ALSO SEEKING SUPPORT
Houseman gave it a go for a week, with a special takeout menu, but this yesterday from Ned Baldwin: “Houseman’s cooks, porters, waitstaff and managers are the lifeblood of our restaurant. They’ve also been hit early and hard by the economic impact of COVID-19. We’ve been incredibly moved by how many of you have reached out to check in and offer support as we made the rapid decision to close the restaurant until it’s safe to reopen. We don’t know when that will be, but we do know that until then, 26 hard-working, talented and deeply committed employees, will be reliant on unemployment benefits, which in many cases, do not provide a living wage. So we’ve launched an emergency fundraiser to help support them through this uncertain and frightening time. Donating to it is one meaningful way to support our restaurant and ensure that our staff, the very people who make the food and the vibe at Houseman what it is, can weather this storm and be there to welcome you all back.”

AND FROM FRENCHETTE~
“In these difficult and uncertain times we ask that you help us assuage the financial crisis many of our staff face from unemployment. We are exploring different avenues of assistance, but also wanted to reach out to you our community, neighbors, family, friends. 100% of the proceeds go to our staff and really anything helps. Additionally, we encourage you to donate to your local food pantries to support others in need, and most importantly continue to treat each other with dignity and kindness. We look forward to welcoming you back as soon as possible. Words cannot convey our gratitude for all of you. We are very proud to be a part of the fabric of this city.” Donate on GoFundMe here.

  1. Curious…question re. all 3 of the closing restaurants. As Maxwell’s says: “ We are not staying open for delivery or takeout and therefore our entire staff is in need of financial help.” Why not give it a go? Perhaps you can’t retain your entire staff but there’s a whole city looking to keep eating. Is it just not financially feasible?

    • good question- the answer is for many restaurants and food businesses is it’s not financially feasible. the restaurant has to have at least 1 or 2 chefs, a porter, a delivery person( could be the porter) and 1 manager( to take orders and manage day to day operations like ordering, scheduling, communications, paper work etc.
depending on the payroll, for some restaurants 20 + take out meals will not cover even the staff payroll

  2. Just noticed that Gigino has a GoFund Me for laid off staff. Though they are still doing take out from Greenwich Street, they don’t need as many people. I hope that they will all make it through and that people will do what they can to help them as it’s a long time neighborhood favorite!
