KIDS HELPING OUT
Avani and Arjun Khorana, both graduates of PS 234 from a few years back, have started a GoFundMe page to supplement the Taste of Tribeca Community Fund, which is buying meals from local restaurants to send to hospital emergency room staff around the city. “Taste of Tribeca holds a special place in our hearts – it raises significant funds for our elementary school, PS 234. While the event has been cancelled this year, we are now raising funds to support our neighborhood’s struggling restaurants, and the medical professionals working so selflessly to care for COVID-19 patients.”

AFTER SCHOOL ART ZOOM CLASSES
Local resident Maria Katzman, a painter who has taught art for 20 years and runs after school classes called On-Site Art, is now offering a series of online classes through Zoom. Students will learn practical approaches to drawing, sketching, and water coloring. Each class offers the opportunity to experiment with a variety of art materials while focusing on the basics including contour line, cross contour line, modified contour drawing, shading, space, color, and expressive mark making. Students will explore a variety of genres including still life, architecture, landscape, portraits and abstract art while developing a visual vocabulary and learning about the elements of art. EMPIRE STATE OF MIND
Written by Janet Sewell, Angela Hunte, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Sylvia Robinson, Burt Keyes, Alicia Keys, Alexander Shuckburgh
Performed by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys

Grew up in a town that is famous as a place of movie scenes
Noise is always loud, there are sirens all around and the streets are mean
If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere, that’s what they say
Seeing my face in lights or my name in marquees found down on Broadway
Even if it ain’t all it seems, I got a pocketful of dreams
*****
Baby I’m from New York
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There’s nothing you can’t do
Now you’re in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Hear it for New York, New York, New York
*****
On the avenue, there ain’t never a curfew, ladies work so hard
Such a melting pot, on the corner selling rock, preachers pray to God
Hail a gypsy cab, takes me down from Harlem to the Brooklyn Bridge
Someone sleeps tonight with a hunger far more than an empty fridge
I’ma make it by any means, I got a pocketful of dreams
*****
One hand in the air for the big city
Street lights, big dreams, all looking pretty
No place in the world that can compare
Put your lighters in the air, everybody say
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

  1. I’ll take “On Broadway” for a NYC anthem. I love the brilliant George Benson version(s)…

“They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway (on Broadway)
They say there’s always magic in the air (on Broadway)
But when you’re walkin’ down that street
And you ain’t had enough to eat
The glitter rubs right off and you’re nowhere (on Broadway)…”

There are so many videos of his various performances online. Here’s one from happier days at NYC’s Cafe Wha?. An impromptu performance, with unfamiliar band, on someone else’s guitar, and as the comments note, Benson shows his brilliance regardless of circumstance. A master musician and gift to all of us.

  2. Your video is on Church (and Duane) and not Broadway.

  3. Duane Park lights flashed on and off at 7pm last night! It was *awesome*!

  4. Playlist to play if possible for the person playing. We hear and see you!!
