Odeon boarded up; several store windows broken last night

The Odeon has decided to board up its windows in anticipation of the protests coming to City Hall tomorrow, and clearly just in time. Across the street, the windows of Tribeca Apothecary and Max were smashed, along the windows of The Liquor Store, which is now the Todd Snyder shop, at 2 White.

Police said that 100 stores across the city were broken into yesterday during and after the protests; I am awaiting more details from them on other local incidents. The quarantine is either over or just beginning.

The Odeon folks they said weren’t sure how long they would stay boarded up, and would just take it day by day.

In these cases no arrests were made yet, but in general, protesters across the city have been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct (Penal Law Sec. 240.20) and unlawful assembly (Penal Law Sec. 240.10).

  1. Can’t wait to see what the protestors do to the “racist” WW2 memorials.

  2. The TMobile store next to Whole Foods, as well as the Verizon store on Broadway, between Duane and Reade, were also hit hard.

  3. Gourmet Garage on Broadway was fixing their front window.

  4. All because nothing says “Justice For George Floyd” better than smashing some storefront windows in Tribeca.

    • To be clear, it doesn’t seem like it’s the protestors that are doing the looting and smashing. Many news outlets are reporting that it’s a totally separate group (groups?) of people doing this to discredit the peaceful protestors and cause chaos.

  5. Hudson Market was broken into reportedly for cigarettes, beer, etc.

  6. So, what would all of you lovely whites suggest the poor and aggrieved do? Try harder? Be nicer? Kiss your white asses harder?
    Whaddya think it’ll take?

    • Why assume we are all white? Sounds like you’re not trying to have a productive conversation but instead trying to paint all whites as racist.

It probably doesn’t matter to you that I’m a POC, my parents came to this country with close to nothing and very limited knowledge of english, I grew up wearing hand-me downs from my older brother (and I’m a female) yet they have been able to make a good life for themselves and so have I. Happy to share how we got here are but you even interested? This doesn’t fit your race-driven narrative.

    • I am still segregating my laundry, do you really think I can figure this out?!

    • My father is an immigrant
He escaped religious persecution from a country where Catholics were not allowed to hold certain jobs and could be rounded up and put in jail and tortured

When it happened Catholics in his country didn’t resist arrest as it would only be worse for them

He came to America and loved his country he fought in war, worked in govt and told us to love America
And all 9 of us did
We never took welfare and we never stole or looted

We are white and I resent being told I have white privilege..
I have worked since 11 years old and didn’t get to check off a box black or Hispanic where I could get a grant or scholarship to Princeton or Harvard

I am not alone – There are many whites in this country who escaped religious persecution and/or grew up dirt poor (Appalachia etc) and their only way out is to serve in the military so they can get an education.

Do not lump all whites with one broad struck of having white privilege
The looters hurt their cause and utterly destroyed it with the cold blooded murder of David Dorn a retired police officer who wanted to help his friend by guarding his pawn shop and cold blooded murder of a St. Louis federal officer guarding a federal building – 2 blacks by the way killed by blacks supposedly protesting the killing of a black

The looting and murder was disgusting and degrading to the victims and the beating up of shopkeepers and destroying businesses of both struggling minority business owners and family run businesses was horrendous

I’m sorry but no sympathy left except for the families of the dead, injured and destroyed businesses

      • @Sandra – you clearly, and sadly, do not know what the term “white privilege” means. It might be interesting if you did a tiny bit of research to understand what it actually means. Amen.

  7. Ahhh I remember the good ‘ol days, like just this past Memorial Day weekend. Remember when our esteemed mayor said about beach goers, “Anyone tries to get in the water, they’ll be taken right out of the water.” And also this gem too when he said “that police will take action against people gathering together to drink on sidewalks in lieu of bars. This practice, he said, ‘violates what we’re saying about social distancing, and that puts lives in danger. We’re not going to tolerate people starting to congregate. It’s as simple as that.'”

How I miss those days. Good times, good times.

  8. @ Meg S., what a brilliant/magnificent concept.

  9. “PUBLISHED 7:45 AM ET Jun. 03, 2020

“NEW YORK – Roman Kusayev, the owner of Roman K Salon, has built up his small business over the last several years and now has three locations.

“On Monday morning, the Roman K Salon in TriBeCa was targeted by looters.

“Kusayev said that he was awoken around 2 a.m. after an alarm at the salon went off.

“When he checked the security camera, he saw about a half dozen people running in and out of the store with everything from the salon’s computers to hair products.

“ ‘I never thought they were going to hit mom and pop shops like this. I’ve spoken to all my neighbors. My friends barbershop got hit last night as well I mean it’s just making a mess,’ Kusayev said.”
