Coming this week: Return of the Fields

This is a banner week for access to neighborhood outdoor spaces — especially the active use kind. The Battery Park City fields opened on Friday. Hours are back to the usual 8a to 9p. And Governors Island opens on July 15. Hours are 10 to 5 on the weekdays, and 10 to 6 on the weekends. See the ferry schedule here (reservations are required). Could be soon for Pier 40.

It’s a bit confusing, but if you cross reference all the different state guidelines, Phase 3 (which we are in as of July 6) should permit “low and moderate risk” sports, including:
soccer
baseball / softball
mini-golf
doubles tennis
frisbee
gymnastics
flag football

The rest of the list is here, along with the “high risk” sports that have to wait (basketball for starters). As for the sidelines, masks are required for all non-sport activities and recommended for sports; people not playing must social distance.

  1. Basketball is back on in BPC today, at least, at Rockefeller, with the re-installment of the rims & nets. 20 players among three separate games. Two had masks.
