Augustine will close permanently due to the pandemic

Augustine, the super swank and wonderfully vibrant Keith McNally restaurant in The Beekman hotel on the other side of City Hall, will close permanently due to the pandemic, McNally announced on his personal Instagram. He said he couldn’t make a deal with the landlord, which I assume is the hotel. His expression below says it all.

The restaurant has been closed since March 15, and never reopened even partially. McNally also closed Lucky Strike in April, and the hotel itself — which I believe is owned by Hyatt — remains closed.

Augustine opened in the fall of 2016, shortly after 5 Beekman was converted into the hotel. And it really was a spectacular incarnation of a sophisticated yet classic New York bar. (I imagine it looked like Paris to some, but I am not that well travelled.)

I am now kicking myself for the reservation I cancelled there on March 12 out of virus caution. Back then, we thought there would always be another chance. How naive we were.

  1. Sad that this will be a trend for a bit. I only went once but had planned to go back.

  2. This is so sad. It was such a beautiful space. Loved having high tea there. What does the landlord get out of not working something out with him?

  3. No! No, no, no. I loved it there. It was so beautiful. All these amazing restaurants closing for good. All the lives impacted. It is just too sad.

  4. This is such sad news! Augustine was our go-to in the neighborhood. We loved popping by for a quick drink, lingering a bit too long at the table in the window on a lazy Sunday and most of all, we will miss the welcoming and attentive staff that took such great care of us. We wish everyone the best in health and a speedy job search for a new opportunity. We will miss you!

  5. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! We spent many a special occasion at Augustine…anniversaries, Christmas eve, date night. Such a beautiful restaurant, wonderful staff, and delicious food.

  6. A terrible loss not only for the neighborhood, but for this visionary restaurateur and his wonderful staff. I hope his other locations fare better. Sad times for all indeed.

  7. Too bad. Another overpriced gyp joint for people with too much money closed.

Don’t worry, there will be Civil War soon, the dollar will collapse and the drugged up hordes will come and loot the place of anything not screwed down.l
